Not enough to post pictures yet though.

Facing my flaws is painful, but if I don't identify the things that I can change and change them I'll never be as good as I used to be.

Middle Class Strife

Psych 1101 at a junior college is to me the most dangerous little bit of knowledge that America offers. Obsessions of the week: my weight, my failure to leave the house and long walks in the middle of the night that I rarely actually take.

Productivity-wise I've fallen off a little but not much. I'd like to see myself able to pick up the camera every day but I said that last year.

Weight-wise I'm coming to terms with my body since I finally have a full wardrobe of clothes that fit me. Also dancing around in my underwear taking pictures with Photobooth and posting them on the internet to rave reviews. I have to keep reminding myself that I have a lot of muscle mass under my layer of 'love butter' and that my body is still kickin' even if it's bigger than when I worked out or just worked 7 days a week. We finally got him into UGA and they fixed him right up from what I can tell. Of course it's much more technical than that but I don't feel like posting my dog's post op creatinine levels.

He... is kinda like a puppy again in demeanor like big dogs usually are. And we found the Atlanta Lab Rescue just in time to help pay for the whole thing.

There's about a half chance though that he'll just founder after this, but I think he's got a lot more life left in him. Every day he gets up to a freshly prepared breakfast and a fenced in yard full of small saplings for him to uproot. Truly a king's life from a dog's perspective! I think the best indicator will be this summer when he's swimming. Dog can swim for days.

So yeah. Last night I made nail polish out of MAC's Jewel Marine glitter, clear nail polish, another glitter np and a little jelly teal. It's pretty fuckin' gorg imo.

Picture post to follow tonight probably.

Too addicted to Tumblr to fuck.

Seriously, it is taking over my life. But badabada the urge to blog comes on strong when it comes on.

I've been thinking about, designing and doing a lot of nails lately, so I thought I would do a little timeline from most recent to most distant (that I can find.)

This week I am rocking modest coke shovels (my favorite square shape btw, no more flare than this plz) in white and a custom glitter teal. The right hand has added mylar and a wee bit of clear powder added to extend the custom mix. I also added some rhinestones and will probably dust on a few bullion accents after a day or two.

At first I tried to use nail forms, but of course my bitten beds are still too short and unwieldy to provide a proper base for them yet. So I returned to my trusty clear tips with wells and caked on the white tips, spending almost an hour hand sculpting them because getting that non dominant hand to sculpt a nice smile line is like pulling teeth.

Finally I pulled my ratios back a bit and pushed in the mermaidy goodness, being careful to add enough product at the apex and NOT let it puddle at the cuticles. Then I hand filed, added the silver smile line detail, coated the shit out of them with Seche Vite, added rhinestones and Seche Vite'd again.

I plan on pulling out the big girl camera later and getting some nice shots of their best angles.

Last week for New Year I took pictures of the pointy goodness I sculpted on tips in pure white, tipped in red and added rhinestones at the cuticle line.

And here are a few more blasts from the past(s) a few nail wants and some random funny pictures. The good news is that I only have a little left to do for my holiday plans to come off as smooth as silk. The bad news is that I have little to no excitement in regards to my grandparents visiting. It's a learned affliction for sure.

The family trio plus Dave had a lovely dinner tonight. Mom roasted a beef tenderloin and made here amazing mashed potatoes. I daringly opened a can of green beans and dumped them into a container to be heated. Culinary skills, I have them. Seriously though, Zach and I made delicious apple filled crepes with some glorious Galas that have been quietly begging to be used up from the bottom of the fridge. I didn't document them however because a) I'm always tired and b) they were so delicious WE ATE THEM ALL.

So to conclude, I recommend that you visit my tumblr if you haven't But I'm also running around the house in the morning in my underwear until about 10. It's a lovely balance.

These are the most recentest claws that I glued to my finger tips.

And this is what I do every day from 8-10am. Madras curry powder (or powder or paste of your choice)
1 Thai chilli or other hot pepper, partially deseeded
2 tsp. onion powder
12 oz. Mickey's Fine Malt Liquor
1 c. chicken noodle soup, less chicken and noodles (this is really excellent cheap stock, btw)
2 c. hot water
1/2 tsp. fish or soy sauce
1 tsp. Sriracha garlic chilli sauce
3 tbs. maple syrup (or 1 tbs. molasses and 2 tbs. sugar OR 3 tbs. honey)
1 can coconut milk

Preheat oven to 350F. Drizzle a baking sheet with olive oil and plunk down pumpkin chunks with GUSTO. Toss your garlic cloves on that bitch too. Bake for 1 hour.

While you are waiting for the pumpkin and garlic to transform into soft delicious manna, dice scallions and ginger. In a large saucepan sautee scallions and ginger with butter and olive oil, then add the rest of the dry spices and the chilli. When everything gets hot and starts browning, deglaze with 12 oz. of your choice of malt liquor. (Or use white wine, I don't give a fuck.) Let that mess simmer down to about 1/2 of the original volume and add 1 c. of concentrated chicken (or vegetable stock for you pansy ass vegans) and 2c. of water. Or 2 c. regular stock and 1 c. water. Bring that back up to a simmer and season to taste with fish sauce (or soy sauce, Vegtards,) sriracha (I used about a teaspoon,) and salt.

By this point your pumpkin should be tender and sliding out of its skin so pull it out of the oven when the timer you set goes off. What? You didn't set a timer? I DON'T CARE, 'CAUSE YOU CAN LOOK AT IT AND TELL THAT IT'S DONE. AND YOU ALSO CAN'T REALLY OVER COOK IT HAHAHA! Squeeze the garlic cloves out of their garlic sweaters and into the soup base and let it simma simma good for about 20 minutes. Then whiz that shiz with your immersion blender. Don't have an immersion blender? Well I'm here to tell you that you need one, but in the mean time you can just puree everything at the same time in the blender or the food processor. Which brings us to the next step!

Getting pumpkin puree out of freshly baked pumpkin can be a bitch of a task. If you just buzz it in the blender/ food processor there's a lot of thick pulpy fiber left in and frankly, I prefer my soup a little... soupier. So what I did was get a great upper body workout by running my punkin chunks through the food mill right into the soup base. BUT if you don't have a food mill, your immersion blender can't handle the hardcore nature of the pumpkin or you just don't wanna, you can add the peeled pumpkin to the food processor, pour some soup base over it and blend, then pour it back into the stock pot, add more pumpkin and more soup goop, lather rinse and repeat. If you don't have the stones to mess with either of these then I guess you can use canned pumpkin puree but I better not find out about it. Oh, and add the diced apple to the pumpkin when you puree.

Finally, add the maple syrup and coconut milk to the pot and adjust the sweet/ salt to taste. Also remember that the chilli will continue to release heat as the flavors meld, so unless you plan on serving all of the soup immediately go lighter on the heat than you think you want to. ENJOY THIS FUCKING AWESOME SOUP HOT OR COLD OR WITH A DOLLOP OF YOGURT OR SOUR CREAM. OR NOT.

I carved these two single dogwood hanging large-gauge earlets and have yet to make a match for either. Always have been. My addiction to nail polish started in 3rd grade and has continued with voracity into the present. As I got older and more dextrous my preoccupation has spread into acrylics, japan style deco and all of the technology surrounding the love of nails that I share with millions of women around the world. I give a mean manicure and have self-taught nearly every service that's performed in any nail salon. There's just one problem-

I'm a nail biter.

Now when I say that I'm a biter, I don't mean a nibbler or a cuticle picker or some less destructive mutilator of fingers. I shred them, gnaw them and tear them apart until they bleed and sometimes even past that point. A few years ago I began enlisting the help of a razor blade to remove a perfect sliver of cuticle and the bit of strange skin that protrudes from under the nail at the tip. People have been known to take notice of my fingetips and recoil in horror, asking what could have happened as if some gremlin of the night or keratin hungry bacteria had taken hold of me when I wasn't looking. In a way that's true because I have woken to find myself working a piece of nail in my mouth that I most certainly didn't fall asleep with. And it's not confined to my fingers either- it's the toes too. After a shower I contort like a mad yogi and shred those nails off too, rendering myself incapable of wearing the ever so fashionable peep-toe heels of late or even a pair of plastic flip flops.

I've tried everything to stop. Bitter nailpolishes, capsacin dips, acrylic tips, hypnosis, anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. All that stuck were the pills as it seems I needed them anyway, and all the rest were a temporary discomfort as I dragged my teeth across the tips of my fingers.

Today I've come to a place of acceptance if not resignation. I still make deals with myself, attempt to file and polish instead of hacking and chewing, buy open toed shoes as a masochistic incentive to at least leave my poor feet alone. But at this point I wonder if it's even possible to stop this insane cycle. There's a perverse pleasure I get from working my teeth under a layer of nail and peeling it back to the stinging cuticle then ripping it off of the bed. Something in my mind always wants to get back to my bare nail and separate it from the smooth skin. I don't know if I'll ever have the courage to quiet it.

Comics unrelated to crafts.

These are my other daily read comics. I went as a faun. Crafty-wise I made the armatures for my hair antlers, antler earrings (glow in the dark, bitch,) toe covers for my ridiculous stripper shoes and spats to make them seem more hoof-like. Aside from being a big fatty wampus I think it came off perfectly.

After untangling my nest from around those armatures I took the extensions I used to bulk up the base and made a nice clip-in rat for the bouffant of my dreams, any time I want.

Just before Halloween I sculpted some badass pointy dragon nails with my ASP kit from Sally's. They were supposed to go with my costume, but since my initial idea didn't come through I peeled them off and saved them for a later date. What occasion exactly will require such evil talons.... I have no idea.

And to add to my ever growing list of hobbies and preoccupations now comes the magical world of 3d paper figures. As it turns out, 4chan is still only good for archives of obscure shit on the internet as they had all of the Spiky Baby templates tucked away in a sendspace for me. So here are some projects that I've created in order from most recent to least!

To start we have my ghoulish Halloween creation. About 12" high, polymer clay, wire, foil, paint, felt, fabric, hot glue and sore fingers haha.

I taught Katie how to knit! As photographs they're rather rough, but this blog is about knitting and they give you a reasonable depiction of what I've been up to on the old needles.

First off, the cable band sweater from two posts ago. I realized that on the dummy it appeared to have puffed sleeves which it indeed does not. I also have the cables a bit more blocking attention which subsequently fixed some of the bust fitting issues I was having.

My only concern is that the bottom ribbing may yet be bound off too tightly/ is too short. Fortunately I found another huge skein of what I knit it out of (I swear, Fisherman's Wool is hiding in every room of my house) so that is easily fixed.

Next we have the Giant Cotton Scarf, which I really wish was a bit longer actually, but all the yarn's gone. :(

I apologize for muffin-topping in these two. I forgot to put on a belt. :x

And now my new personal favorite, the Super Thrifty Jo Ann's Clearance Pastel Tweeds Sweater. I'm fond of long titles, can you tell?

This picture is true to color

This was knit from the bottom up, joined and worked flat from the V-neck and finished with single crochet, applied I-cord and a button. Awww.

So now I'm working on that indigo mohair thing that I mentioned. I have both of the sleeves finished, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how I'm going to knit the body. Square neck, turtle neck (no, too itchy), round neck, V neck? Ribbing? Stockinette? Lace? I started with a gauge swatch working the mohair on tiny needles but I am definitely not ever going to finish the damn thing if I go that route. It's just too fucking fuzzy to work at any speed. Le sigh. I'm sure I'll get it figured out by Monday.

Busy and nothing to show for it.

It's been a weird couple of weeks. The knitting bug has bitten me over and over, but the photography bee has been straying far, far away. So far I've finished the ludicrous bulky scarf, a sweater from super clearance yarn and a stuffed rabbit commissioned by someone on LJ. But so far I only have pictures of the bunny, so here you go.

He's knit from my own pattern in a combination of handspun and wool/cotton commercial (because I ran out before the second ear/ both hands.) Found some safety eyes in my button drawer and stuffed him with shredded foam. I officially love that stuff! It's kind of a pain to get in, but it's so much more even and pliable than fiberfill. Unfortunately it's also more expensive, but the bag I have should last through a couple dozen more bunny-sized projects.

I pretty much made the ultimate yarn score when I visited JoAnn fabrics last week, even though I went in for buttons... I found a single ply wool/cotton that was an eerie match to my kool-aid dyed handspun, as well as some lovely bulky tweeds, all of which was $1.50 a skein. Man was I happy! I also bought a bunch of cheap yarn on Etsy and Paypal was a total pain in the ass because I forgot to take my old bank account out. The lady I got it from transformed into a total bitch by the end of the fiasco but I suppose that's to be expected. I got my yarn, she got paid and it's all better now. Plus I'm working up a fantastic little number in the indigo mohair blend from that transaction which is probably going to be a major staple in my wardrobe.

Oh yeah, you saw that coming didn't you?

So tomorrow the bunny goes in the mail, the camera comes out and I'm gonna update AGAIN. My grandparents were about to drive me, literally, insane. However, I did get lots of crafting done to calm my nerves and wrote my first honest-to-god knitting pattern. W00t!

First, the amigurumi Cthulhu, from Cthulhu Crochet.

I had this wee ball of Caron Simply Soft in a color that I thought was very appropriate.

As it turns out it was and I had just enough yarn. I did however omit some increases for the body because I wanted the head to turn out larger than the body and it didn't seem to be going that way after round 5. One arm is also slightly larger than the other, which I attribute to carelessness.

He will be my brother's Christmas present when he returns from sunny Florida (lucky little creep) and I suspect I will have a very joyful teenager on my hands.

Secondly, my first real attempt at dyeing handspun yarn with kool-aid. I used 2 packages of lemon-lime and 1 of blue raspberry in the microwave to get a slightly variegated kelly green. I can't wait to see it dry/ knitted.

And now, for the goodies.

Ribbed Fingerless Mitts With Thumbs That Grow As If From a Vine

Size- Small/ Medium/ Large
View shown is my hand which is 7" around at the wrist and 10" at the palmspan wearing the Small. I knit the second mitt from it to avoid any errors, but please contact me if you have any questions or problems!

m1(p)- pick up bar between stitches from back to front and purl through the front of the stitch
m1(k)- pick up bar between stitches from back to front and knit through the front of the stitch

All of the thumb increases are worked at the beginning and end of the round. To start I have my very first finished sweater.

While I consider myself an accomplished knitter especially when it comes to technical feats I haven't been particularly prolific in the past. I attribute this to the fact that I enjoy the theory of knitting, but the repetitive uninteresting drudgery of reading a pattern as I go is something I just can't get behind. So I went back to the funniest and most engaging knitting manual I've ever found- Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitting Without Tears. After about an hour of sketching and calculating I came up with the above and began working. Exhilarated by the prospect of working my own design and actively making decisions about my design as I worked, I found that the knitting sped by and a mere two days later I was rewarded with my new favorite garment.

When it comes to small knitted objects like hats and gloves I can tolerate a pattern from time to time, especially when it's something that I think is absolutely gorgeous.

I discovered this bobbled beret in Vogue knitting this month and set to work immediately. It's going to make a wonderful Christmas gift to one of my closest friends.

Cables are one of my favorite techniques in knitting. Whenever I see a panel that I'd like to try out, a hat is a great way to see how it behaves in yarn.

This hat was knit in handspun that I made on a drop spindle. The bottom age has some Halloween spiderweb material spun in for a little variety.

Now I'm on to works in progress. First up- a truly epic scarf.

Knit in crazy bulky cotton on size 17s with a simple lace pattern and 2 st garter border. Inspired by the trend last winter of scarves exaggerated in length and stitch.

Next up, sock #1 of Interlocking Leaves from Knitty.

I made them quite a bit shorter because I prefer either ankle socks or knee socks and I didn't have enough yarn for the latter. I also modified the pattern to include one less lace repeat in order to accommodate the gauge that I was getting. The author must knit very, very tightly. I kinda regret using a self-striping yarn for these, but they are socks and most of the world will probably never see them!

I was at the outlet mall last weekend and saw a really great crochet hat with a knit liner in Lucky Jeans. After sorting through my fingering wool I made up a brighter color assortment and got to work.

Now all that's left is the lining which I believe I'll make up in that groovy green.

Last of all, my latest learning experience is hairpin lace.

Wool-ease sport weight yarn worked on a rusty old loom, about 6 feet. I'm going to make one more strip, cable it together and add some fringe. Easy peasy. I recommend it to everyone!

New crafting blog.

Because there just aren't enough out there...

I made this to catalog my knitting, crocheting and other crafty exploits, hopefully contributing to my Etsy inventory and overall productiveness.
